Learn how to break the cycle of dry skin

Step inside a microclimate

How many different climates are you exposed to over the course of one day? From your morning shower to an air-conditioned office to the cabin of an airplane, women today can go through as many as eight unique microclimates over the course of a day. Over time, exposure to these mini atmospheric fluctuations can cause skin to malfunction, leading to a breakdown in its moisture barrier. As a result, skin becomes dry as it loses its ability to effectively hold on to moisture.

What is the cycle of dry skin?

The Cycle of Dry Skin is a degenerative cycle that begins when environmental factors, primarily low humidity, cause the skin to become dehydrated. This compromises the skin's moisture barrier and creates a disruption in the delicate arrangement of fatty tissues between the cells of the skin's outer layer. This, in turn, leads to a loss of "natural moisturising factors" (NMF), a specific group of amino acids that act as internal moisturisers within these cells.

Once the moisture barrier is disrupted, the skin begins to dehydrate even faster. A frenzy of skin cell overproduction takes place in an effort to compensate for the disrupted barrier. Meanwhile, the skin's natural renewal process (exfoliation) slows. The result is a thickening of the skin as old cells accumulate on top of one another, forming the brittle, flaking layer we know as dry skin.

The Cycle of Dry Skin inhibits skin's ability to:
- HYDRATE itself
- RENEW (exfoliate) its outer layers
- REPLENISH the skin's natural moisturising factors
- REPAIR its moisturising barrier

How do we break the cycle?

In order to REPAIR skin, first you must HYDRATE, RENEW and REPLENISH it.

Keep yourself HYDRATED by drinking water. Most people have heard that they need to drink 8 glasses a day, but everyone's body is unique. You only need to drink when your body tells you.

RENEW skin by gently cleansing it each night. All skin types require cleaning, moisture and stimulation. A good cleanser, such as Olay Gentle Foaming Face Wash, also moisturises skin, leaving it soft and hydrated, without stripping its natural oils.

REPLENISH your skin with moisturising cream daily. Be generous with the areas where wrinkles can form, such as around the eyes. Not only do moisturisers rehydrate skin, they also seal in moisture. Olay makes UV moisturisers and anti-ageing moisturisers to cater for all skin needs.
